Mayor Bartlett’s communitywide health and fitness initiative is dedicated to giving Tulsans the information and online tools they can use to be healthy, active and happy.
“GetLeanTulsa.com is a great Web site that encourages Tulsans to make simple changes in their lives that will help them feel better. Mayor and Victoria Bartlett Challenge Tulsans to Get Lean Tulsa
October 26, 2010 – Mayor Dewey Bartlett and First Lady Victoria Bartlett are on a mission to turn Green Country into Lean Country. The Bartletts, joined by Tulsa Health Department officials, several Tulsa sports teams and Hawthorne Elementary students, launched a brand-new health and fitness initiative today called Get Lean Tulsa.
Mayor Bartlett’s Get Lean Tulsa is a community-based initiative to ‘shape up’ the City of Tulsa. The Web site, GetLeanTulsa.com was created by the City of Tulsa, in cooperation with the Tulsa Health Department, Helo Oklahoma, Inc., and our sponsor Subway.
GetLeanTulsa.com replaces the TulsaMillionMiles Web site and offers Tulsans online tools to track their miles and activity, plus all-new stats on the Community Counter, featuring:
Businesses ● Neighborhoods ● Groups ● Pounds Lost ● Body Fat Lost ● Inches Lost
Waist Inches Lost ● Minutes Logged ● Calories Burned ● Activity Logged
First Lady Victoria Bartlett serves as the spokesperson for Get Lean Tulsa and is working on several projects to help Tulsans improve their health awareness, nutrition goals and fitness levels, while educating children and their parents about the importance of living healthy and fit lifestyles.
Tulsa is among some of the unhealthiest cities in the country and Oklahoma is ranked among the lowest in national healthy surveys and reports. The Mayor’s Get Lean initiative is aimed at changing those unhealthy rankings. Tulsans typically don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables or exercise enough. Get Lean Tulsa encourages Tulsans to make simple changes that will help them feel better and make a difference in their health.
At the kickoff event, Hawthorne Elementary students received Get Lean Tulsa back sacks filled with fruit and low-fat granola bars, courtesy of Subway and the Tulsa Health Department. Tulsa Shock’s mascot, “Volt,” as well as TU’s mascot, Captain Cane delighted the kids with their antics, while representatives from the Tulsa Talons, Tulsa 66ers, and the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane led the students in a fun game of “Simon Says.”
Sponsors and advisors to the Web site include the City of Tulsa, Tulsa Parks, Tulsa Health Department, and Subway.
For more information about Get Lean Tulsa, visit www.GetLeanTulsa.com and find out what Mayor Dewey Bartlett and Victoria Bartlett are doing to improve the health and fitness of our community. Register today and begin your journey to a fitter and leaner you!

Sept. 10, 2010 - Most Americans still aren’t eating enough vegetables, and fruit consumption has dropped slightly, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report. Researchers found that last year about one-third of U.S. adults consumed fruit or fruit juice at least twice a day, down slightly from more than 34 percent in 2000. About 26 percent of Americans ate vegetables three or more times a day, the same results as reported in 2000.

California had the highest consumption rate for fruit, Oklahoma had the lowest. The state with the highest consumption rate for vegetables was Tennessee, and South Dakota had the lowest of any state. No state, however, met the Healthy People 2010 targets as set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The goals for fruit and vegetable consumption under this initiative are for three-quarters of adults to consume two or more fruit servings and for half of adults to consume three or more vegetable servings each day.
